12 Hour Shifts and Microsoft

I’m approaching three months on the new job and things are going pretty well.  I’m now a moderately competent Win2k administrator, but I’m not sure that’s what I want to be.  I spent some time this past weekend writing Perl scripts and messing with the firewall at my house, and it made me nostalgic for my job at GMTI.  Working with Microsoft products is really a drag.

The twelve hour shifts aren’t too bad, especially given the fact that I leave work at work.  I have to get up at 4am, and I don’t get home until around 6pm, but the long weekends are sweet.  I just have to be disciplined enough to go to bed early, otherwise the headaches are horrendous.

One of my biggest problems has been finding time to workout.  Once I get home from work, eat dinner, and get the kids in bed, I’m too beat to do anything else.  I end up working out once or maybe twice over the weekend, and that’s it.  Maybe it’s just a matter of discipline.

Another side effect of the shift work is that Lianne and I have been watching much less TV.  The really neat thing is that we don’t seem to miss it.  It’s amazing how inconsequential those 30 minute sitcoms are.  Don’t get me wrong, I just spent 3 hours watching a footbal game, I’m not against entertainment, but we really do waste a lot of time.  Since time is an ever shrinking commodity I’m realizing that we should be much more careful how we use it.
